生ませの親・レンのたっての願いで、盲導犬になる為に訓練士・多和田に預けられることになった一匹のラブラドール・レトリーヴァーの子犬。おなかに鳥が羽を広げたようなブチがあることから、パピーウォーカー・仁井夫妻によって“クイール”と名付けられたその子犬は、1年間、夫妻のもとで愛情一杯に育てられた後、いよいよ盲導犬訓練センターで本格的な訓練を受けることになる。のんびり屋でマイペースなクイールに、ヴェテランの多和田でさえ手を焼くこともあったが、やがてクイールは立派な盲導犬へと成長し、視覚障害者の渡辺と巡り会う。初めこそ息の合わなかった渡辺とクイール。だが、ハーネスを介して伝わってくるクイールの思いやりに、渡辺は次第に心を開くようになり、互いにかけがえのない存在になっていく。しかし、クイールとの生活が2年を過ぎた頃、渡辺は重度の糖尿病に冒され、3年後、この世を去ってしまう。そしてそれから8年後、仁井夫妻のもとで余生を送っていたクイールもまた、12年と25日の生涯を静かに閉じるのだった。

Harris is ably supported by the waiflike Jenny Agutter as Frith, who radiates the requisite amount of youthful innocence and naivety, and won a best supporting actress Emmy Award for her performance.

1960年代、長野県松本市。秋津高校3年の亮介は登校途中に一匹の黒い野良犬を見つけ、自分の弁当をその犬に分け与えてやった。その頃、亮介のクラスでは、生徒同士が学園祭の出し物に使う犬の作り物を壊してしまったことで揉めていた。そんなところへ亮介が駆けつけた時、生徒たちは彼に着いてきた黒犬の佇まいを見て閃く。果たしてこの本物の犬は作り物の代役に起用され、出し物は黒犬の活躍で盛況に終わる。これによって一躍学校の人気者となったこの犬はクロと名付けられ、校舎内に居つくようになるのだった。
