フランスのアルプスの麓にある大学街ゲルノンで、目をくりぬかれ、両手を切断され、体中を鋭利な刃物で切りつけられた、胎児のような格好をさせられた遺体が地上50mの崖から発見される猟奇殺人事件がおきた。この事件の捜査に、パリ市警から元特殊捜査部隊のニーマンス警視が派遣される。殺害された男性から摘出された眼球は医学的な理にかなっており、このことからニーマンスは地元の眼科医にアドバイスを貰いに行く。しかし、そこで彼は眼科医からゲルノンの歪んだ風習を聞かされることになる。

修道院でキリスト像から血が流れる奇怪な事件が発生。ニーマンス警視が捜査を開始する中、像と同じ体勢をとらされた男性の他殺体が見つかる。一方、麻薬事件を捜査する若手刑事レダは、キリストに似た傷だらけの男と遭遇し、彼を病院に運ぶ。ニーマンスは修道院の被害者が病院に搬入された男の仲間と知り、レダと共同で捜査に当たることに。やがて事件の背後に“黙示録の天使たち”を名乗る謎の組織があることが明らかになる。

The story follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps, who is ordered to travel to a remote village and sort out a recently deceased client’s papers.
