謎の異常気象が相次ぐイギリス。政府の極秘諜報機関「ミニストリー・シークレット・サービス」は気象学者のエマ・ピールに調査を依頼する。しかし研究所は何者かの手によって破壊され、極秘研究中だった気象シールドも壊されていた。監視カメラに映されていた人物はエマにそっくり。 そこでミニストリーのトップ、マザーの命令により、機関の諜報員ジョン・スティードはエマと共同で犯人を探し出すことに。機関のナンバー2、ファーザーは彼女が犯人ではないかと疑っていた。 2人はかつてミニストリーの職員だった天才科学者のオーガスト・デ・ウィンター卿に目をつける。彼はファーザーと手を組んで世界の気象を操り、世界征服を企んでいたのだ。ウィンターは全世界を氷河期に陥れると脅迫する。スティードとエマは彼の気象制御基地へ乗り組んだ。

ネバダの砂漠地帯にある小さな田舎町に突然出現した未知の生物。地中を自在に移動する巨大な蛇状モンスターと住民の攻防が、白昼の下で展開される。「JAWS／ジョーズ」のプロットを使った作品は数限りないが、地表を波立たせて襲い来るこのモンスターは文字通り“陸のジョーズ”で、映画の出来も本家に迫るものがある。モンスターの設定から、それを有効に生かしきったストーリーまで、とにかくアイディア豊富で、存分に楽しめる怪獣映画の快作。TVムービーによる続編「トレマーズ2」も製作された。

ジョン・A・ルッソの原作を、CM監督出身のジョージ・A・ロメロが監督した歴史的作品であり、ゾンビ映画の記念碑的作品。全編に横溢するカニバリズムや反モラル的ラストなど当時のタブーに挑戦した内容は、根底に流れる独自のヒューマニズムが制作当時の世相を反映しており、賛否両論あったがロングランを続けた。結果として、ニューヨーク近代美術館にも所蔵されるカルト・クラシックとなっており、アメリカ国立フィルム登録簿に永久保存登録されている。父の墓参りの途中、バーバラと兄のジョニーは生ける屍に襲われる。兄を殺された恐怖と悲しみの中、バーバラは近くの民家に逃げ込む。民家には黒人青年のベンのほか、若いカップル、中年夫婦と大怪我を負ったその娘が集まってくるが、外部との連絡も取れないまま、周囲はゾンビの群れに取り囲まれていた。ドアや窓を塞ぎゾンビの侵入を防いだうえで脱出の方策を探るベンに対し、地下室に籠ることにこだわるハリーが対立する。ゾンビたちが人間を食い殺していることをテレビで知ったバーバラたちは、最寄りの避難所への脱出を試みる。
