The Forty-Niners (1954)

A few decades after the destruction of the Inca Empire, a Spanish expedition led by the infamous Aguirre leaves the mountains of Peru and goes down the Amazon River in search of the lost city of El Dorado. When great difficulties arise, Aguirre’s men start to wonder whether their quest will lead them to prosperity or certain death.

カリフォルニア州に住むミラー判事(ブラッドリー・ウィットフォード)のもとで暮らしていた雑種犬のバックは、4歳のときにさらわれて売り飛ばされ、そり犬として働いていた。その後再び売られて厳しい環境で重労働を強いられていたところを、一人で旅をしていたソーントン(ハリソン・フォード)に助けられる。世話をされるうちに、ソーントンとの間に信頼と友情が芽生え、彼らは地図にない地を目指す冒険に出る。

1607年、英国軍人ジョン・スミスはラトクリフ総督率いる開拓団に参加し、新大陸アメリカのヴァージニア植民地へ旅立つ。一方、そこに昔から暮らす先住民パウアタン族の首長の娘ポカホンタスは不思議な夢と精霊グランドマザー・ウイローに導かれ、開拓団の船を発見する。ポカホンタスは真っ先に上陸してきたスミスと運命的に出会い、2人は言葉が通じないながらも心を通わすように。だが先住民と開拓団は対立を深めていく。

1851年、オレゴン州。化学者で金鉱探しを志すヘルマン・カーミット・ウォームは、コモドールが知りたがっている有益な秘密を保持しており、カリフォルニアに向かう彼を捕らえるために、悪名高い暗殺者であるシスターズ兄弟を送り込む。

1925年のメキシコ。黄金探しに夢をかける老人ハワードと出会い、金鉱掘りに乗り出したアメリカ人のドブズとカーティン。運良く砂金を発見する3人だが、いつしか強欲な本性を現したドブズが仲間の裏切りを疑い始める。 黄金をめぐる男たちの欲望と葛藤をジョン・ヒューストン監督が骨太に描いた力作。アカデミー監督賞、脚色賞を受賞したほか、ハワードを演じた、名優で監督の父・ウォルターが助演男優賞に輝いた。

雪深い山に金鉱を捜し求めてきた一人の金鉱探し・チャーリー。猛吹雪に難渋した上、転がり込んだ小屋にはお尋ね者のブラック・ラーセンがいた。やがて、同じく猛吹雪で転がり込んできた金鉱探しのビッグ・ジム・マッケイと避難生活を送ることとなる。寒さと飢えがピークに達し、ビッグ・ジムはチャーリーがニワトリに見える始末。やがて靴を食べる生活まで始めた。 ビッグ・ジムと別れ、麓に出来た新興の街にやってきたチャーリーは酒場で出会ったジョージアに一目ぼれ。最初はチャーリーの単なる片思いであったが、ジョージアも粗暴なジャックに愛想を尽かし、チャーリーに少しずつ思いを寄せるようになる。 酒場で偶然再会したビッグ・ジムと艱難辛苦の上、ついに金鉱を探し当て百万長者になったチャーリー。帰りの船上でジョージアと再会。めでたく結ばれる。

舞台はゴールド・ラッシュににぎわう1900年のアラスカ。金鉱を掘りあてたサムは、相棒の婚約者を迎えるためにシアトルへ向かうが……。西部劇の王者ジョン・ウェインがコメディ・タッチの西部劇に挑戦したことでも話題に。

A meteor lands in Jamestown California in 1849 during the gold rush. It is found by miners who release it's spoors which turn the population into blood thirsty mutants.

When whites hunger after the gold on Ute Indian land, a bigoted young man finds himself forced into a peacekeeping role.

In the latter half of the 19th century, gold is discovered in the Black Hills, sacred land of the Lakota people. Gold diggers, profiteers and adventurers flock to the region. Among them is the hard-hearted land speculator Bludgeon, who tries to expel the Lakota using brutal methods. Lakota warriors retaliate, and soon the gold diggers' town becomes a battlefield.

Fortune hunters from all over the country rushing to the Klondike in 1897 to seek their fortunes in the gold are tested by hardships of the journey.
