ベルトルッチらしい美しい場面で綴る、魅惑的な輪廻転生譚。案内役となるのはアメリカ・シアトルの9歳の少年ジェシー。突然訪れた三人のラマ僧が彼の前にひざまずく。少年を仏陀の生まれ変わり、活仏だと言うのだ。父と共に未知のチベットに旅した少年は、そこで太古の偉大な王子ゴータマの伝説を学び、その姿を目の当たりに見て仏性に目覚めていく。インド・ロケによる王子が栄華を極めるシークェンスや、彼が悟りを開いて仏陀となるシーン等、SFXも絶妙で、映像的には大変見応えがある。

地方都市。中学生の雄一は優等生の星野と親しくなるが、夏の旅行をきっかけに友人たちの関係は変容する。新学期、クラス一の不良をけんかで倒した星野は、やがて彼自身が暴君と化していく。暴行や万引き、クラスメートに売春させるなど、エスカレートする彼の行動に、いじめの対象となった雄一も荷担させられることに。雄一は現実から目をそらすように、崇拝するアーティスト、リリイ・シュシュのファンサイトを作る。
