ジョゼフ・デルテーイの小説版による“ジャンヌ・ダルク裁判”の物語で、間違いなくサイレント映画の一つの到達点だろう。“悪魔の子”とされ拷問を受けるジャンヌが苦しみに一度は屈服し、囚人として髪を刈られるシーンの厳しさ（実際に髪を切られ涙するクローズ・アップ）、そして自分を持ち直し、あえて火刑台に向かい火にかけられ、苦悶に顔を歪める瞬間、見る者をも貫く痛み（これも鮮烈なクローズ・アップで表現される）。

カナダのトロントにある地方TV局の社長が、奇妙なビデオテープを発見した。暴力と官能に溢れた映像に、彼とその恋人は次第に虜となっていく。やがてテープに秘められた恐るべき陥穽が明らかになる……。

動物管理局に勤めるウォルターは自分の誕生日に妻から妄想小説「ザ・ナンバー・23」という古本をプレゼントされた。ウォルターはその本を読んでいるうちに、本の中の主人公である探偵・フィンガリングと自分との多くの共通点を見つけ、その主人公が自分自身であり、自分の事が書かれている小説であると思い込む。本の中ではフィンガリングは「23」という数字に取り付かれていく。ウォルターも次第に「23」に取り付かれ、翻弄されていくのだった。世の中のあらゆる事象が「23」という数字に支配され、すべてが「23」に関連づけられている・・・と。ウォルターの身の回りの数字もすべてが「23」に見えてきた。日付、時間、車のナンバー、本のページ、エレベーターの階数、名前や言葉、番地、・・・。

3人のバックパッカーは、彼らを待ち受ける地獄の見当もつかず、快楽主義的な期待に応えることを約束するスロバキアの街に向かう。

マサチューセッツ州の某大学の脳外科医ヒルの研究室で助手を務めるハーバート・ウェストはある日、死体を蘇生させる血清の発明に成功する。 ハーバートは血清の信用性を確かめるため、同僚のダンと共に死体置場で実験を試みるが、ゾンビとなって暴れだす死体の噂を聞きつけてやって来た学長のホルジーを殺してしまう。ハーバートとダンが血清でホルジーを生き返らせたところ、彼は狂暴なゾンビと化す。 さらに、ハーバートの血清の技術を奪おうとして彼に殺され、実験台にされていたヒルもゾンビと化して暴れ出したため、事態は混乱していく。

ザ・ビートルズの映画初出演作。当時人気の頂点にあった彼らの実生活をベースに脚色。熱狂的なファンに追いかけられるなか、TV出演やライブツアーに目まぐるしく動きまわるビートルズの姿をドキュメンタリー・タッチに描いた音楽コメディー。
