アポロとの死闘で判定負けしたロッキーは、危険なボクシングから足を洗い、恋人エイドリアンと結婚。正業に就いて家庭を築こうとするが、ボクシング一筋に生きてきた彼はどんな仕事をしてもうまくいかない。一方、無名のロッキーをKOできなかったアポロはチャンピオンとしてのプライドを打ち砕かれ、評価も人気も失っていた。復讐に燃えるアポロはマスコミを使ってロッキーを挑発、再戦のリングに引きずり上げようと画策する。

大恐慌時代に活躍した実在のボクサー、ジム・ブラドックの伝説を映画化した感動の物語。貧困のなか、家族を養うためだけに戦い、ヘヴィ級チャンピオンとなった小市民を、巨匠ロン・ハワード監督が情感たっぷりに描く。迫力満点のファイト・シーンの撮影も見事。

ヘビー級王座についたロッキーは連戦連勝を重ね、愛する家族と幸福の絶頂へ。引退を考えだした矢先、新たな挑戦者クラバーが現われる。野獣のような闘志を持つクラバーを恐れる老トレーナーのミッキーは、ロッキーに対戦をやめるように進言するが、挑発に乗った彼は聞く耳を持たない。心労が重なるミッキーは試合前日、ついに心臓発作を起こして倒れてしまう。不安を抱えてリングに上がったロッキーは、無残に敗北してしまう。

かつてのチャンピオン・ボクサー、ロッキー。今は引退し、地元フィラデルフィアでレストランを営む。妻エイドリアンは世を去り、息子のロバートは父に反発してビジネスマンの道に。満ち足りているがむなしい毎日の中、ロッキーは以前のようにリングに立ちたいと望みだす。同じころ、現役ヘビー級チャンピオンのディクソンは対戦相手に恵まれず、伝説的なロッキーとのエキシビションマッチを企画。ロッキーはこの挑戦を受けて立つ。

フィラデルフィアの下町。無名ボクサーのロッキーは本業だけでは食えず、借金の取りたてを請け負って日銭を稼いでいた。そんなある日、世界チャンピオンのアポロが気まぐれで無名選手にチャンスを与えようと言い出し、無作為に選んだロッキーを挑戦者に指名する。降って湧いたチャンスを得て、ロッキーは想いを寄せる女性エイドリアンに、15ラウンド最後まで戦いぬくことで自分の愛を証明すると約束する。

徹底した科学トレーニングで作り上げられたソ連最強のボクサー、ドラゴが訪米。そのトレーナーである妻ルドミラは挑発的な発言を繰り返し、刺激を受けた元チャンピオンのアポロはロッキーをセコンドにエキシビションマッチに臨む。だが、恐るべき破壊力を持ったドラゴのパンチを受け、アポロはリング上で絶命してしまう。親友の死を目の当たりにしたロッキーは仇討ちを誓い、タイトルを返上して敵地モスクワへと乗り込む。

激戦を続けてきた影響で脳に損傷が見つかり、ボクシングからの引退を余儀なくされたロッキー。その上税理士の財産使い込みが発覚、破産したロッキーはかつて暮らした下町で無一文から再出発することになる。そんなある日、彼の前に若いボクサー、トミーが現われる。粗削りながらその才能に気付いたロッキーはトレーナーを引き受け、トミーは気鋭のボクサーに成長。だがマスコミはトミーを「ロッキーの操り人形」と書き立てる。

一万四千人の観衆が集まったアトランティックシティ(ニュージャージー)のバンクアトランティック・センター。そこで行われていたボクシングのヘビー級タイトルマッチの最中、VIP席にいたカークランド国防長官が暗殺された。現場にいた地元の汚職刑事リック・サントーロは犯人捜査を進めるうち、そこに巨大な陰謀が仕組まれていることに気付く。

Isi and Ossi couldn't be any more different: She's a billionaire's daughter from Heidelberg, he's a struggling boxer from the nearby town of Mannheim. This early cinematic instance of a close-up—or, more accurately, a medium close-up shot of the chest and face of the maker of this film and others like it, Georges Demenÿ saying “Je vous aime”—was made at the request of Hector Marichelle, professor and director of the National Deaf-Mute Institute in France, who planned to use filmed speech to teach deaf students to speak and lip read. This required close views of the performer's lip movements. The project was given to Demenÿ by Étienne-Jules Marey, who headed the Station Physiologique in Paris and whose chronophotographic scientific research of motion is among the most important contributions to the invention of movies. Despite these educational and scientific beginnings, however, this project led Demenÿ to pursue and influence the commercialism of cinema.

William K.L. Dickson brings his hat from his one hand to the other and moves his head slightly, as a small nod toward the audience. This was the first film produced by the Edison Manufacturing Company to be shown to public audiences and the press.

Alleged silent black-and-white short film shot at Apsley Gate, Hyde Park, London. It was claimed to be the first motion picture until pre-dating footage shot by Louis Le Prince was discovered. It was never publicly shown and is now considered a lost film with no known surviving prints or stills.

Hyde Park Corner (also known as Leisurely Pedestrians, Open Topped Buses and Hansom Cabs with Trotting Horses) depicts life at Hyde Park Corner in London. It is claimed to be the first film set in London, as well as the first to be filmed on celluloid. It is currently considered a partially lost film, with only 6 possible film frames preserved as part of the Jonathan Silent Film Collection.

The last remaining production of Le Prince's LPCC Type-16 (16-lens camera) is part of a gelatine film shot in 32 images/second, and pictures a man walking around a corner. Le Prince, who was in Leeds (UK) at that time, sent these images to his wife in New York City in a letter dated 18 August 1887.

The last remaining film of Le Prince's LPCCP Type-1 MkII single-lens camera is a sequence of frames of his son, Adolphe Le Prince, playing a diatonic button accordion. It was recorded on the steps of the house of Joseph Whitley, Adolphe's grandfather.

One of the pictures to be seen in the machine, for example, was that of a blacksmith shop in which two men were working, one shoeing a horse, the other heating iron at the forge. One would be seen to drive the nail into the shoe of the horse's hoof, to change his position and every movement needed in the work was clearly shown as if the object was in real (life). In fact, the whole routine of the two men's labor and their movements for the day was presented to the view of the observer.

A short black-and-white silent documentary film featuring one dog jumping through hoops and another dancing in a costume, which was considered lost until footage from an 1896 Fairground Programme was identified as being from this film.
