1206年、ノルウェーは内戦で国が分裂していた。ノルウェー国王ホーコン3世は対立派に暗殺されてしまうが、彼の唯一残った希望である後継者は深い秘密で守られていた。知られてしまうと殺されてしまうまだ幼い子供を守る為に、ビルケバイネルと呼ばれる王に忠実な2人のノルウェー戦士シェルヴァルドとトシュテンは全てを犠牲にする。王の後継者となるまだ2歳の男の子を守り抜くために、過酷なノルウェーの冬の山を越えようとするが、すぐそこまで追っ手が迫っていた。

They both do a great job, and what began as a love story turns into a sad and depressing story of two ruined persons. The story is told by Thomas Glahn from his "exile" in Thailand, where he in the beginning of the movie receives two green feathers from Edvarda.
