ヒンズー教とキリスト教とイスラム教とを同時に信奉し、かつ円周率を延々と暗記するほど賢く、泳ぎや楽器も得意な少年パイ。インドで動物園を経営していたパイの一家は、新天地を求めて動物とともにカナダに移住を決断。しかし乗船した日本の貨物船は太平洋を北上中に海難事故に遭い、16歳の少年パイが人間では唯一の生存者となる。
