元グリーンベレーでありベトナム戦争から帰還したジョン・ランボー。戦争は終わり、たった一人生き残った戦友を訪ねた帰り道、ふらりと田舎町に立ち寄ったが、汚らしい風来坊という見た目だけで保安官にいわれの無い嫌がらせを受け、無実でありながら不当逮捕されてしまう。保安官事務所内で静かに抵抗するランボーだったが、監禁され暴行されるうち次第に戦場でかつて経験した過酷な拷問の苦痛が蘇り警官達をあっという間に打ちのめしそのまま逃亡してしまう。追われるランボーだが逃げ込む先は彼のグラウンドである山の中。ゲリラ戦で培った戦闘技術で追跡する保安官全てを圧倒的に屈服させるが、ランボーの逃走はマスコミ、州警察、軍を巻き込み次第に大事になってゆく。

警官相手に戦い服役中だったランボーは、元上官トラウトマンから特殊任務に就くことを条件に釈放された。特殊任務とは、ベトナム戦争で行方不明になったアメリカ人兵士と捕虜の動向を調査すること。戦闘は一切不要で、情報収集だけの任務だった。ところが捕虜収容所で米兵の拷問を目撃したランボーは、指令に背いて米兵を救出。その後、彼らは国境近くまで逃げ延びるが、米軍のヘリコプターはふたりを見殺しにして去ってしまう。

近未来のアメリカ。政府が腐敗した社会には、「物質D」と呼ばれる右脳と左脳を分裂させてしまう恐ろしいドラッグが蔓延。人民の権利はことごとく踏みにじられていた。覆面麻薬捜査官は、「物質D」の供給源を探るため、自らジャンキーとなりドラッグの世界へと深く潜入していくが、やがて捜査官の立場で、ジャンキーとしての自分を監視する事態に陥る。そして、彼の中で捜査官とジャンキーという2つの人格が分裂し始め、徐々に、しかし確実に崩壊していくのだった。＜現実と幻覚とを曖昧にする表現手段として、俳優を撮影した実写映像をトレースしてアニメーション化するロトスコープという技法によって制作された。近未来のアメリカを舞台に、麻薬常習者たちと彼らを取り巻く監視社会を描いている。常習者たちの言動や共同体の様子、プライバシーに関する不安や妄想は、かつて麻薬を常用していた原作者ディックの体験に基づく。＞
