石油ブームに沸く20世紀初頭のカリフォルニア。鉱山労働者のプレインビューは、石油が沸く源泉があるという情報を耳にする。息子とともに石油採掘事業に乗り出したプレインビューは、異様なまでの欲望で富と権力を手にしていく。
