太平洋戦争末期、硫黄島への上陸を果たしたアメリカ軍は、日本軍のしぶとくて粘り強い守りに意外な苦戦を強いられ、長期戦の様相を呈することに。そんなさなか、6人の米兵たちが島の山頂に星条旗を打ち立てる様子を撮影した1枚の写真が、銃後のアメリカ国民を熱狂させ、一躍英雄に祭り上げられた彼らは祖国に呼び戻されて、戦費調達のために全米中を旅して回る、国債キャンペーンに駆り出されることとなる。けれども6人のうち、3人は既に戦死。今なお熾烈な戦いを続ける戦友たちをあとに残して、祖国に生還したドク、アイラ、レイニーは、次第に苦悩と憂愁の色を深めていく。
