ジョン・A・ルッソの原作を、CM監督出身のジョージ・A・ロメロが監督した歴史的作品であり、ゾンビ映画の記念碑的作品。全編に横溢するカニバリズムや反モラル的ラストなど当時のタブーに挑戦した内容は、根底に流れる独自のヒューマニズムが制作当時の世相を反映しており、賛否両論あったがロングランを続けた。結果として、ニューヨーク近代美術館にも所蔵されるカルト・クラシックとなっており、アメリカ国立フィルム登録簿に永久保存登録されている。父の墓参りの途中、バーバラと兄のジョニーは生ける屍に襲われる。兄を殺された恐怖と悲しみの中、バーバラは近くの民家に逃げ込む。民家には黒人青年のベンのほか、若いカップル、中年夫婦と大怪我を負ったその娘が集まってくるが、外部との連絡も取れないまま、周囲はゾンビの群れに取り囲まれていた。ドアや窓を塞ぎゾンビの侵入を防いだうえで脱出の方策を探るベンに対し、地下室に籠ることにこだわるハリーが対立する。ゾンビたちが人間を食い殺していることをテレビで知ったバーバラたちは、最寄りの避難所への脱出を試みる。

ある日突然死んだはずの人間が次々とゾンビになり、そのうちの一人が知恵をつけ始めた。銃や、器具を使うことを覚えたゾンビたちにライリー（サイモン・ベイカー）やわずかな生存者たちは窮地に追い込まれる。

ある日、ハーバードヴィル空港へ降り立ったクレアは、利用客達の中に1人のゾンビを発見した。そのゾンビに噛まれ次々と感染者が増大し空港は大パニックとなる。一方、空港へ向かって飛行中の旅客機内でも感染者が発生し、緊急着陸を試みるも失敗して空港ロビーへ激突してしまう。まもなく、壊れた機体からは乗員や乗客が次々と姿を現すが、彼らは皆ゾンビ化していた。この事態によってクレアは、居合わせたデイビスや知人の姪のラーニー達と共に、空港の一室へ立てこもることとなる。
