1920年代、心理学の教授であるウィリアム･モールトン･マーストンは、授業を受けていた学生のオリーブ･バーンに惹かれ、彼女を助手にする。彼とともに研究をしていた妻のエリザベスは当初オリーブへの嫌悪感を示すが、彼女もまた徐々にオリーブに惹かれていく。3人は共同で嘘発見器の発明に向けて研究に没頭するが、あるときその関係が明るみになり大学を追い出されてしまう。大学を出て3人で共同生活をする中、2人の進歩的な女性に触発され、マーストンは”ワンダー・ウーマン”という新たなヒロインを産み出す。
