1914年、ナイル河畔の地下の神殿で見つかった古代文字は火・水・土・風以外の“第5の要素”があると示す。2214年、ニューヨーク。久しぶりに地球を訪れたモンドシャワン人の宇宙船は、武器商人ゾーグとその手下マンガロワ人に撃墜される。宇宙船にあった細胞を再生すると、地球の言語が分からない美少女が生まれ、町に逃げ出す。彼女、リールーはタクシー運転手コーベンに救われ、彼女の言葉が分かる神父のもとへ向かう。

科学の飛躍的な発展の結果、労働者たちは地下に押しやられ、巨大な工場で家畜同然に管理されている一方、資本家たちは地上で享楽的生活を送っている。社長の息子は地下に降りて、彼らの悲惨な生活を知る。労働者の娘マリアは、労使間に人間的な絆が皆無であることを仲間に訴え、これがストライキの気運を生む。そこで社長はマリアを監禁、彼女そっくりの人造人間を作って事態収拾にあたるが、人造人間は狂い始める。

2035年、人類は謎のウイルスによって99％を失い、絶滅寸前に陥っていた。その原因を探るべく、受刑者のジェームズがタイムトラベルの実験台にされ、過去の世界へと送られる。手掛かりとなるのは“12モンキーズ”という謎めいた言葉だけ。まずウイルスが発生する6年前、1990年にたどり着いたジェームズだが、警察に逮捕され、心の病を治す施設に送られてしまう。彼はそこで、ジェフリーという男に出会う。

20世紀のどこかの国。情報省はテロの容疑者「タトル」を「バトル」と打ち間違えてしまい、無関係なバトル氏を無理やり連行していく。それを一部始終見ていた上の階に住むトラック運転手のジルが抗議をするも、全く相手にされない。 一方、情報局に勤めるサムは、このミスをなんとかするために試行錯誤していた。近頃サムは、夢の中でナイトの格好をして、美女を助け出すというおかしな夢を見ていたが、情報省に抗議に来ていたジルがその美女にそっくりだということに気づく。 ある日、サムが家に帰るとダクトが故障しており、非合法のダクト修理屋と名乗るタトルが勝手に直してしまう。サムはまた夢の中でサムライの怪物と戦い、美女を救う夢を見る。サムはジルの正体を知るために断っていた昇格を望み、友人であったジャックの元を訪ねる。そして、様々な事柄が複雑に絡まりあっていく。

ロサンジェルスで保険の調査員をしていたレナード。ある日、何者かが家に侵入し、妻がレイプされたうえ殺害されてしまう。その光景を目撃してしまったレナードはショックで前向性健忘となってしまう。彼は記憶を消さないためポラロイドにメモを書き、体にタトゥーを刻みながら犯人の手掛かりを追っていく……。 前向性健忘（発症以前の記憶はあるものの、それ以降は数分前の出来事さえ忘れてしまう症状）という記憶障害に見舞われた男が、最愛の妻を殺した犯人を追う異色サスペンス。

2019年、酸性雨が降りしきり、昼なお暗いロサンゼルス。かつて逃亡した人造人間「レプリカント」を処分することが任務の特捜刑事「ブレードランナー」であったデッカードは、引退していたが強引に復職させられ、殺人を犯して逃亡する4体のレプリカントを追う任務に就くことになる。ネクサス6という最新型である彼らは、一見しただけでは普通の人間と区別がつかない。デッカードはネクサス6型を製造するタイレル社へ行き、社長秘書レイチェルに対して警察のレプリカント識別テストを試してみる。

ガイ・リッチー監督・脚本によるクライム・ムービー。一攫千金を狙う4人の若者を軸に、ギャングやマフィアが入り交じって繰り広げる群像劇を独特のユーモアを交えて描く。巧妙なストーリー展開やテンポある演出に加え、多彩な登場人物が見せる妙な味わいが秀逸。ロンドンの下町に生きるエディはある日、仲間3人から金を集め、ギャンブルに投資するが惨敗。逆にその元締めに多額の借金を背負ってしまう。返済猶予は一週間。途方に暮れるエディたちだったが、彼らは偶然隣人の強盗計画を耳にする。

デヴィッド・ボウイの曲名から取られた映画タイトルでも示す通り、７０年代ロンドンのグラム・ロック全盛期を見事に描ききった話題の映画。ユアン・マクレガーと共に主役を演じ一躍スターの座に上りつめたジョナサン・リース・マイヤーズからしばらく目が離せません。
