1841年、ニューヨーク州サラトガのソロモン・ノーサップは自由黒人のヴァイオリニストだった。彼は妻と子供2人と順風満帆な生活を送っていた。ある日、彼は二人組の男たちから金儲けができる周遊公演に参加しないかと誘いを受けた。ある晩、二人組の男たちにノーサップは薬漬けにされ、昏睡したまま奴隷商に売られることとなった。彼は自分は北部の自由黒人だと主張するが、材木商のウィリアム・フォードに購入される。

奴隷のスパルタカスは奴隷商人バタイアタスに買われ、剣闘士となり、剣闘士としての訓練を受けていた。ある日、ローマの偉大な将軍クラサスが訪れ、剣闘士の真剣勝負を要請した。スパルタカスを含め4人の奴隷が選ばれた。スパルタカスと黒人のドラバが戦い、スパルタカスを仕留める寸前にトラバはクラサスに向かって槍を投げつけたためその場で処刑される……。
