「デスペラード」「フロム・ダスク・ティル・ドーン」のロバート・ロドリゲスと、「スクリーム」の脚本家ケヴィン・ウィリアムソンが組んだSFスリラー。気弱な少年ケイシーは、ある日、グラウンドで奇妙な生き物を見つける。その生き物を水槽に入れた時、その生き物は変形し、攻撃的な本性を露にした。やがて、ケイシーはやたらに水を欲しがる辺りの人達のおかしな行動に気づく。「あの生物が人間に寄生しているかもしれない」と感じたケイシーは、仲間と共に学園の調査を開始。そこで、取り付かれた先生が保険医を襲う場面に遭遇する……。

MITに入学を許可されたが学費の工面に苦心する秀才デヴィッド。屋根裏で途方に暮れていた彼は、幼いころの誕生会を録画したビデオを発見する。なんとその映像には、一瞬だが現在の彼の姿が映り込んでいた。仲間たちと真相を探る中で、彼は亡父の作業場からタイムマシンの核となる部品を発見する。なんとかマシンを完成させた彼らは過去へと戻り、ロトくじを当てたり試験をやり直したりと好き放題に過去を改変しはじめる。

文明が荒廃した社会から、人類は完全に平等で争いもない平和な理想郷を作り上げる。その社会で育ち次世代に記憶を伝える「記憶を受け継ぐ者」に選ばれたジョナスは、全ての記憶を持つ「記憶を注ぐ者」と対面したことで、恐れや憎悪といった人間の本能的な感情や、理想社会に隠された暗い過去に気付いていく。
