黒人初のメジャーリーガー、ジャッキー・ロビンソンの伝記ドラマ。白人の世界だったメジャーリーグに飛び込み、偏見や差別に屈することなく奮闘した彼の姿を描く。1947年、ブルックリン・ドジャースと契約を交わし、黒人初のメジャーリーガーとしてデビューしたジャッキー・ロビンソン。人種差別の激しかった当時、チームメートや他球団の選手、マスコミや民衆からの汚いヤジや数々の仕打ちに耐えながら、黙々とこん身のプレーを続けるジャッキーの姿に、周囲は心を動かされていく…。

実在のミドル級ボクサー、ジェイク・ラモッタの栄光と挫折の半生。試合シーンの壮絶な迫力は筆舌に尽くし難く、ボクシング映画としてのクォリティも高いが、あくまでも作品の根底にあるのは、自らの猜疑心によって妻や弟を失う男を描いた人間ドラマ。引退後のシーンのため体重を25キロ増やしてまで破滅型の主人公を演じきったデ・ニーロはアカデミー主演男優賞を受賞。全編のほとんどを占める白黒画面も美しい。
