1800年。フランスのストラスブール。軽騎兵のフェロー中尉(ハーヴェイ・カイテル)が町の有力者の甥を決闘で傷つけた。“名誉のため”という名目だったが、軍の命令はフェローに厳しかった。その命令を単に伝える使命でフェローのもとを訪れた軽騎兵デュベール中尉(キース・キャラダイン)は、理由もなくフェローに決闘を申し込まれ、名誉のために受けてたち、彼に傷を与えた。この日から二人の宿命的な対決の人生がはじまった。フェローはデュベールとの決闘に執念を燃やし、彼の行く先々に姿を現わした。二度目の対決は、デュベールがアウグスブルグに駐屯していた時だった。決闘で負傷したデュベールに、将軍はこれ以上決闘を続ければ除隊させると告げた。しかし、1806年、リューべックではデュベールがフェローを傷つけて終わるが、1812年ロシア遠征では、奇妙な友情のような感情が芽ばえだし、凍るような寒さの中で互いに手をさしのべあうのだった。そして1814年、ルイ18世が即位したフランス。デュベールは、姉のすすめでアデル(クリスティーナ・レインズ)と結婚し、しあわせで平穏な生活を送っていた。そこにまたしてもフェローが現われ、決闘を申し込んだ。最後の決闘はピストルで行なわれることになった。廃虚に銃声が轟いた。しかし、優勢に立ったデュベールは、フェローから的をはずして発砲し、その場を去っていた。
