1963年のブロンクスを舞台に、徒党を組む若者たちの姿を描いた青春映画。イタリア系非行グループ“ワンダラーズ”を主役に、中国人や黒人など多様なグループが登場し、抗争や連帯といった群像劇が綴られるが、ストーリーの起伏には大きく欠ける。後半登場する暴力グループ“ダッキー・ボーイズ”の不気味さに、P・カウフマンの前作「SF／ボディ・スナッチャー」（78）のタッチが見られる。

英国の作家、ニック・ホーンビィの同名ベストセラー小説に惚れ込んだジョン・キューザックの情熱から生まれた意欲作。自ら製作・脚本・音楽監修を担当している。キャスティングも豪華そのもの。
