アメリカ外交官ロバート・ソーンはローマの産院で自分の子が死産であったことを知る。悲嘆するロバートだったが同日同時刻に生まれた孤児を知りそのまま養子としてダミアンと名づけ引き取ることにした。ダミアンの誕生パーティの最中に乳母が突然首吊り投身自殺した事件をきっかけにダミアンを調べる写真家はロバートに孤児を紹介した神父からダミアンの出生を探り始める。
