災厄によって人類が逃げ出し、滅亡に向かいつつある地球。ある理由で北極に残った老科学者オーガスティンは、取り残された少女と出会い、共に生活を始める。そんな中、長い探査任務を終えた宇宙船が地球に帰還しようとしていることが判明する。宇宙船の乗組員サリーは、地球との交信が途絶えたことに不安を抱きながらも、仲間たちと航行を続けていた。そこでオーガスティンは、地球がすでに帰還できる状態ではなくなっている現状を宇宙船に伝えようと奮闘する。

26年前に爆発事故を起こし問題となったロシアのチェルノブイリ原子力発電所。今では周辺の街も含め廃墟とかした土地になっている。物語は、今なお放射能の残る踏み込んではいけないチェルノブイリの居住地を訪れた観光客たちが、子供のような影を見かける。興味本意で調べはじめるが、一人また一人と得体の知れない影に襲われていく。

メキシコでの任務の帰路、マイアミに立ち寄ったイギリス秘密情報部員ジェームズ・ボンドは、かつてのカジノ・ロワイヤルでの勝負の際同席したデュポンと再会し、彼の頼みでオーリック・ゴールドフィンガーのカードのいかさまを暴いた。ロンドンへ戻ったボンドは、ゴールドフィンガーがスメルシュの手先となって金の密輸を行っているらしいことを聞かされ、その調査を命じられた。調査中、ボンドはゴールドフィンガーに捕らわれ、彼がアメリカ合衆国のフォート・ノックスを襲撃して合衆国金塊保管所に貯蔵された金塊を奪取し、ソ連の巡洋艦に積み込んで海外に運び去ろうとしていることを知る。

Mark 13 is a government-built killing machine programmed with artificial intelligence, able to repair and recharge itself from any energy source.
