アポロ1号の失敗から3年後の1969年、アームストロング船長が初めて月面着陸に成功。その同じ年、予備チームだったジム（トム・ハンクス）、フレッド（ビル・パクストン）、ケン（ゲイリー・シニーズ）の3人は、アポロ13の乗組員に選ばれる。だが、打ち上げ直前に大きな問題が起こる。検査の結果、ケンが風疹に感染した疑いがあることが分かり、急遽、予備チームのジャック（ケヴィン・ベーコン）と交代することになったのだ。1970年4月、無事アポロ13は打ち上げに成功するが、月到着前に突然船内で爆発事故が発生。ヒューストン管制センターでは、アポロ13を地球に戻そうと、職員たちが不眠不休で必死の救出作戦に乗り出す。NASAの協力により船内シーンを実際の無重力空間で撮影するなど、リアルな宇宙描写が満載。奇跡的に生還を果たしたアポロ13の真実の物語を描いた感動ドラマ。

ベルトルッチらしい美しい場面で綴る、魅惑的な輪廻転生譚。案内役となるのはアメリカ・シアトルの9歳の少年ジェシー。突然訪れた三人のラマ僧が彼の前にひざまずく。少年を仏陀の生まれ変わり、活仏だと言うのだ。父と共に未知のチベットに旅した少年は、そこで太古の偉大な王子ゴータマの伝説を学び、その姿を目の当たりに見て仏性に目覚めていく。インド・ロケによる王子が栄華を極めるシークェンスや、彼が悟りを開いて仏陀となるシーン等、SFXも絶妙で、映像的には大変見応えがある。

マクマナス兄弟は、マフィアと諍いをお越したことが原因で自宅を襲撃される。その際相手を殺害した兄弟は、留置場に入れられるが神の啓示を受ける。出所後、教えに従い悪人退治に出掛ける。S・P・フラナリーとノーマン・リーダスがクールな処刑人を演じる。
