億万長者トウェインから招待状を受け取った5人の探偵は、霧の立ちこめるビクトリア調の豪邸に続々と到着した。しかしホストから“時計の針が真夜中の零時を告げる時、このダイニング・ルームで誰かが殺されるだろう。この殺人事件を解いた者には世界一の名探偵の名誉が与えられる”と告げられるや、邸の出入口と窓には全てロックがされてしまった。一体犯人の目的は……？ 豪華キャストで描くミステリー・コメディの快作。
1880年代、アメリカ西部の町。ここで保安官をしていたチョンのもとに中国にいる父親が殺され、皇帝の印が盗まれたとの報せが届く。その報せを寄こしたチョンの妹リンは、そのまま犯人を追ってロンドンに向かった。父の復讐と妹の身を守るためチョンもまたロンドンへ向かう決意をする。彼はロンドンまでの旅費を受け取るためニューヨークにいたかつての相棒のロンのもとを訪ねる。お調子者のロンも、チョンの話を聞き一緒にロンドンまで同行することに。船に乗り無事ロンドンに到着した2人は、さっそくリンの行方を捜すのだったが…。
雑誌編集者ロビンと彼女の婚約者フランクは7泊6日の太平洋へバカンスに出かけることとなったが、搭乗したチャーター機は今にも壊れそうな年代物であった。やがて機は無事にマカテア島へ着いたものの、ロビンに急な仕事が入り、彼女はパイロットのクインと共にタヒチまで戻ることとなった。その途中でチャーター機に故障が発生し、無人島へ不時着してしまう。性格の相性が最悪のロビンとクインは互いに喧嘩ばかり。島にあった旧日本軍機の残骸のフロートを利用してチャーター機の補修をするうち、次第に惹かれあっていく。
