1665年オランダ。失明した父の代わりに家計を支えるため、画家フェルメール（コリン・ファース）の家で使用人として働くことになった17歳の少女グリート（スカーレット・ヨハンソン）。やがて、その美的センスをフェルメールに認められた彼女は、彼の手伝いをし始める。

大恐慌時代に活躍した実在のボクサー、ジム・ブラドックの伝説を映画化した感動の物語。貧困のなか、家族を養うためだけに戦い、ヘヴィ級チャンピオンとなった小市民を、巨匠ロン・ハワード監督が情感たっぷりに描く。迫力満点のファイト・シーンの撮影も見事。
