カリフォルニア州に住むミラー判事(ブラッドリー・ウィットフォード)のもとで暮らしていた雑種犬のバックは、4歳のときにさらわれて売り飛ばされ、そり犬として働いていた。その後再び売られて厳しい環境で重労働を強いられていたところを、一人で旅をしていたソーントン(ハリソン・フォード)に助けられる。世話をされるうちに、ソーントンとの間に信頼と友情が芽生え、彼らは地図にない地を目指す冒険に出る。
