煉瓦女工 (1946)

新聞コラムニストのベンジャミンは、半年前の妻の死を引きずり、14歳の息子ディランや7歳の娘ロージーの教育にも悩む。新聞社を辞めたベンジャミンは、父の遺産を使って新居で人生を再出発させようと考える。郊外の広い家を気に入るが、そこを買うには同じ敷地にあって2年も閉園状態の動物園や飼育員たちも引き取るのが条件。ベンジャミンは意を決して引っ越し、動物園の経営に乗り出すが、意外な出費などのトラブルが続く。

1841年、ニューヨーク州サラトガのソロモン・ノーサップは自由黒人のヴァイオリニストだった。彼は妻と子供2人と順風満帆な生活を送っていた。ある日、彼は二人組の男たちから金儲けができる周遊公演に参加しないかと誘いを受けた。ある晩、二人組の男たちにノーサップは薬漬けにされ、昏睡したまま奴隷商に売られることとなった。彼は自分は北部の自由黒人だと主張するが、材木商のウィリアム・フォードに購入される。

The air is thick with tension as a military squad proceeds to the foot of a mountain base, where they're ordered to wait for backup and hold their position.
