1823年11月のある晩、ウィーンの街でひとりの老人が発狂して自殺を図り、病院へ運ばれた。この老人は、かつてウィーンで最も尊敬された宮廷音楽家、アントニオ・サリエリ。数週間後、サリエリの告白を聞くために若年の神父・フォーグラーが病室を訪れた。やがて、サリエリの回想が始まった…。イタリアに生まれたサリエリは、作曲家として優れた才能を持っていた。やがて音楽の都ウィーンへ赴き、皇帝ヨーゼフ2世付きの宮廷音楽家になった。そんな順調なサリエリの人生も、天才ヴォルフガング・アマデウス・モーツァルトに出会ったことで狂わされていく…。

交通事故で妻と娘を亡くした作曲家は別荘に移り住むが、そこで彼は子供の幽霊と出会う……。70年前に起きた惨劇が引き起こす怪異現象を、ミステリー・タッチで描く。

巨匠ルキノ・ビスコンティの「山猫」と並ぶ代表作で、ノーベル賞作家トーマス・マンの同名小説を原作に、作曲家グスタフの美少年への心酔と老いの苦しみを描いた。「地獄に堕ちた勇者ども」に続いて撮られた、ドイツ3部作の2作目にあたる。療養のためベネチアにやってきたドイツの老作曲家アシェンバッハは、ホテルで少年タジオを見かける。一目で少年の美しさの虜になり、彼の姿を見つけるだけで喜びを感じ始める。全編に流れるのは、アッシェンバッハのモデルになったマーラーの「交響曲第3、5番」。2011年には製作40周年を記念し、ニュープリント版でリバイバル上映された。

生活のために仕方なく音楽教師になったホーランド。やる気のない素振りの生徒らに可能性を見出した彼は、音楽の素晴らしさを必死に伝えようとしていく。感動の涙を呼んだリチャード・ドレイファス主演の名作。

Following Beethoven's death in 1827, his assistant, Schindler, searches for an elusive woman referred to in the composer's love letters as "immortal beloved." As Schindler solves the mystery, a series of flashbacks reveal Beethoven's transformation from passionate young man to troubled musical genius.

However, it has been years since his last success and he is plagued by deafness, loneliness and personal trauma. A copyist is urgently needed to help the composer. A fictional character is introduced in the form of a young conservatory student and aspiring composer named Anna Holtz. The mercurial Beethoven is skeptical that a woman might become involved in his masterpiece but slowly comes to trust in Anna's assistance and in the end becomes quite fond of her. By the time the piece is performed, her presence in his life is an absolute necessity. Her deep understanding of his work is such that she even corrects mistakes he has made, while her passionate personality opens a door into his private world.

Director Martin Scorsese profiles former Beatle George Harrison in this reverent portrait that mixes interviews and archival footage, featuring commentary from the likes of Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono.
