1960年代のアメリカの片田舎。チェコから移民してきた女性セルマは幼い息子ジーンを育てながら工場で働く。遺伝性の病気で視力を失いつつある彼女は、ジーンにだけは同じ運命をたどってほしくないと、手術費用を必死でためている。ところがある日、彼女はその大事な貯金を隣人の警官ビルに盗まれてしまう。しかも奪われた現金を取り戻そうとした彼女は思いがけずビルを殺した容疑で捕まり、刑務所に入れられてしまう。
