As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, Abby Johnson was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women on their reproductive choices. Her passion surrounding a woman's right to choose led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in. Until the day she saw something that changed everything.
物語の舞台は、第2次世界大戦下の日本。主人公は入院中の母を火事で亡くし、父親の再婚に伴って東京から田舎へ移り住んだ少年・牧眞人（まきまひと）だ。父親の再婚相手は、死んだ母とそっくりな母の妹だった。一風変わった7人の老婆が仕える屋敷に住み始めた眞人。その屋敷の近くには、かつて物語が好きな大おじが建て、忽然と姿を消したという廃墟同然の塔があった。眞人は人の言葉をしゃべるアオサギに導かれ、不思議な世界へと冒険に出る。

森本英介は、五年間も東京で浪人暮しをしており、郷里で病院を経営する父とは、裏口入学のことでモメて以来、音信がない。ある夜、鎌倉で、英介は暴走族のリーダーと喧嘩になり、海に潜って、先に顔を上げた方が敗けという勝負をした。翌日、英介は予備校で有島佳という女の子に声をかけられる。彼女は昨夜の一部始終を見ており、一緒にいた桑田敦夫と、英介の真似をして、心中と間違えられたという。いきなり話しかけられてとまどう英介は、ホテルのボーイをしながら予備校に通っていることを彼女に話す。佳は、この夏、釧路から夏期講習を受けるために上京し、姉・悠のところに居候していた。桑田は同じ予備校に通う二浪の男だ。ところで、佳は心中ごっこのとき、死と隣り合わせの瞬間に、このうえもない喜悦を感じたことで英介に興味を持ったのだ。そして、佳と桑田は英介のバイトするホテルで心中未遂を起こしてしまう。二人の収容されている病院に見舞いに行った英介は、そこで、佳の姉の悠と出会う。悠は小学校の給食をつくる仕事をしている。暫くして、悠は、ホテルの一件以来、自分のところから離れていた佳に、ロタ島行きのキップを渡してくれと英介に話す。それは、桑田から佳を離そうとする悠の心づかいだった。しかし、佳はキップを受け取ろうとせず、英介は悠と一緒にロタ島に行った。二人は旅を満喫する。旅から帰り、ホテルでバイトをしていた英介は、学会で上京していた父と出会った。父は学会の開かれる箱根のホテルで話し合おうと話すが、英介は憎しみしか覚えなかった。その頃、経済的に行きづまった佳と桑田が、英介に助けを求めてきた。英介は、二人を父の名で、箱根のホテルに泊まらせることにした。翌日、英介は箱根の警察から連絡を受けた。箱根のホテルにいた佳と桑田の死の知らせであった。心中ごっこが本当の心中になるとは……。鋭い衝撃が英介を襲った。夏の終り、鎌倉の海に英介と悠の姿があった。二人は佳と桑田の行為を語りながら、自分たちが、別々の道を歩みはじめたことを感じていた。そして今、英介は自分のとまどいの季節が終ったことを意識しながら……。
