今は昔、竹取の翁が見つけた光り輝く竹の中からかわいらしい女の子が現れ、翁は媼と共に大切に育てることに。女の子は瞬く間に美しい娘に成長しかぐや姫と名付けられ、うわさを聞き付けた男たちが求婚してくるようになる。彼らに無理難題を突き付け次々と振ったかぐや姫は、やがて月を見ては物思いにふけるようになり……。
