小惑星の衝突により、滅亡が間近に迫った地球。そこに暮らす中年の保険セールスマンのドッジは、長年連れ添った妻に出て行かれてしまい、滅亡まで残り少ない日々をただ無気力に過ごしていた。だがそんなある日、今まで顔も合わせなかった隣人女性ペニーが泣いているのを目撃し、ドッジは彼女に初めて声をかける。

自由を重んじ、それを満喫しながら生きてきた作家のエヴァは、妊娠を機にそのキャリアを投げ打たざるを得なくなる。それゆえに生まれてきた息子ケヴィンとの間にはどこか溝のようなものができてしまい、彼自身もエヴァに決して心を開こうとはしなかった。やがて、美少年へと成長したケヴィンだったが、不穏な言動を繰り返した果てに、エヴァの人生そのものを破壊してしまう恐ろしい事件を引き起こす。
