この選挙、何かおかしい!?民主党の選挙参謀ゲイリー・ジマー(スティーヴ・カレル)は、ヒラリー・クリントンが大敗し、打ちのめされていたが、ウィスコンシン州の小さな町役場で不法移民のために立ち上がる退役軍人ジャック・ヘイスティングス大佐(クリス・クーパー)のバズっているYouTube動画を見て、リベラルな演説で人々の胸を打つ、彼こそが中西部で民主党の票を取り戻す、起死回生の秘策だと確信。ゲイリーは、スイング・ステート(激戦州)のウィスコンシンを足掛かりに地盤を広げるべきと党を説得し、単身アポなしで田舎の寂れた町、ディアラーケンへと赴き大佐に民主党からの町長選出馬を要請する。ゲイリー自身が指揮を取ることを条件に大佐は出馬を了承し、大佐の娘ダイアナ(マッケンジー・デイヴィス)や住民のボランティアと、地道な選挙活動がスタート。しかし、対立候補の現役町長ブラウンに、共和党が宿敵、トランプの選挙参謀フェイス・ブルースター(ローズ・バーン)を送り込む。その日から、ディアラーケン町長選をめぐるゲイリーVSフェイスの戦い、否、民主党VS共和党の巨額を投じた「仁義なき代理戦争」の幕が切って落とされた。選挙資金の調達やテレビCMの応酬など、あの手この手で抗争がエスカレート!果たして次期政権を懸けた、なりふり構わぬ選挙戦の行方やいかに?
