西暦2047年。調査救助船が海王星への極秘任務に飛び立った。その目的は7年前に海王星で消息を絶った超深度宇宙探査船イベント・ホライゾン号の救助であった。実はイベント・ホライゾンには重力制御による新航法システムが取り入れられており、今回の作戦に特別参加したウェアー博士はそのシステムの開発者だった。やがて海王星でイベント・ホライゾンの姿を捕えた一行は船内に侵入するが、同時にクルーが幻覚や幻聴に苛まれるようになっていた。
