第2次世界大戦後のアメリカ。アルコール依存の元海軍兵士のフレディ（ホアキン・フェニックス）は、「ザ・コーズ」という宗教団体の教祖ドッド（フィリップ・シーモア・ホフマン）に出会う。やがてフレディはドッドを信頼し、ドッドもフレディに一目置くように。そんな中、ドッドの妻・ペギー（エイミー・アダムス）は暴力的なフレディを追放するよう夫に進言し……。

2154年、地球上の生活環境は酷く悪化し富裕層は衛星軌道上の宇宙コロニー「エリジウム」へ移住しており、高度な医療技術により老いや病からも解放され快適に暮らしている。地上では大勢の人々が過酷な労働と病気に苦しんでいる。デラコート防衛長官は、エリジウムへの密航者をドロイドや傭兵を配して排除に努めている。そんな中、ロサンゼルスの工場労働者マックスは作業中の不慮の事故により余命５日と診断されエリジウムでの先端医療に希望を求める。
