ジョーは組織も認める腕利きのルーパー（処刑人）。仕事は2074年から2044年に送られてくる標的を、指定された時間に指定された場所で待ち、殺して遺体を処分すること。新たな指令が入り、ジョーは約束の場所でいつものように銃を構えて待つが、目の前に現われたのは、自分に酷似した中年の男。驚愕と混乱で引き金を引くことをためらった現在のジョーの隙をつき、未来のジョーは逃走する。
