舞台は19世紀ヨーロッパのとある小さな村。成金の魚屋のヴァン・ドート夫妻の息子ヴィクターと没落貴族であるエヴァーグロット夫妻の娘ヴィクトリアとの政略結婚が親同士で進められていた。お互い一度も面識もない人と結婚することを不安に思っていたが結婚式前日、リハーサルのために初対面した２人は互い好意を抱く。しかし緊張したヴィクターはリハーサルで失敗を連発し怒った牧師に式の延期を言い渡されてしまう。困った彼は人気のない夜の森で結婚式の練習をしているとき目前に突き出ていた枯れ枝のようなものを花嫁の薬指に見たて指輪をはめたことから大変な事態に巻き込まれる。

雪深い北西部の鉱山町にやって来た賭博師マッケイブが、坑夫相手の女郎屋の建設を始める。女たちを引き連れてきたミラー夫人と共同経営することになた宿屋は好評を博するが、この地に新たな鉱脈がある見込んだ不動産業者が店の買収に現れた……。
限定された空間で起きる事件を巧みに連関させると言ったいわゆる“グランド・ホテル形式”の原点。過去の想い出を引きずるバレリーナ、彼女の真珠の首飾りを狙う、カイゲルン男爵を自称する泥棒。事業が危機にある入り婿社長のプライジング、彼の速記者フレム、余命あと僅かなクリングラインの五人による、一日半の人間模様を描く。当時のMGMスターを豪華に配役。悠然と構えながらも、グールディングの演出は映画的処理の手際が鮮やかで大変魅きつけられる。
サンフランシスコ市警の刑事スコットは、交渉人(ネゴシエーター)として数々の事件を解決してきたが、無鉄砲な行動のために署内では厄介者扱いされ、恋人とも破局寸前にまで陥っていた。そんなある日、宝石強奪犯のコーダによって相棒の刑事が殺害されてしまう。怒りに震えるスコットだったが、署長はそんな彼を新人ネゴシエーターのケヴィンの教育係に任命する。この命令を不服に思う彼だったが、後に二人でコーダを追い詰めていく。

シリーズの主人公であるクルーゾー警部を長年演じ続けたＰ・セラーズの死後、別のキャラクターを立てて製作された作品。シリーズの正当な流れに属してはいるが、趣はまるで異なり、ちょっと間の抜けた刑事が快盗ピンク・パンサーを追跡するという構成になっている。セラーズの抜けた穴はあまりに大きく、それを埋める映画にはならなかった。唯一笑えるのは、保養地の温泉に、００７の疲れを癒すためにロジャー・ムーアがお忍びで来ているという設定で、何と本人がゲスト出演、主役の刑事と一緒に温泉につかっているという不思議な場面が展開されている。
