本土が内戦に揺れる1923年、アイルランドの孤島・イニシェリン島。島民全員が知り合いである平和な島で、パードリック(コリン・ファレル)は長年の友人であるはずのコルム(ブレンダン・グリーソン)から突然絶縁されてしまう。理由も分からず動揺を隠せないパードリックは、妹のシボーンや隣人ドミニクの助けも借りて何とかしようとするも、コルムから「これ以上自分に関わると自分の指を切り落とす」と言い渡される。やがて島には、死を知らせると伝承される精霊が降り立つ。
