［僕］は高校時代の同級生・桜良の言葉をきっかけに母校の教師となった。彼は図書館の改築のため本の整理をしているとき、教え子と話し始めたことをきっかけに、彼女と過ごした数カ月を思い出す。膵臓の病を患う桜良が書いていた「共病文庫」という日記を偶然拾ったことから［僕］は家族以外で唯一、彼女が病気の身であると知る。［僕］は桜良の亡くなる前にしたいことのリストに沿って、彼女と一緒の時間を過ごす。

Father McEnroe supports his leftist views by introducing a program at the prestigious "collegio" (Catholic prep school) St. Patrick to allow free admission of some proletarian kids. One of them is Pedro Machuca, slum-raised son of the cleaning lady in Gonzalo Infante's liberal-bourgeois home. She has some personal prejudicial hurdles to cross before she is able to be a true teacher for these children and of course there are hurdles like the lack of books and supplies.
