現代のサンフランシスコ。とある部屋で、マスコミでのし上がろうとする野心的な若者クリスが、漆黒の髪の美青年ルイへインタビューを始めたが、その内容は驚くべきものだった。18世紀末の米ニューオリンズ。フランス移民のルイは当時25歳。最愛の妻と娘を亡くして絶望する彼に、美貌の吸血鬼レスタトが近づく。彼は、人間らしく揺れ動く繊細な魂のルイに興味を覚え、永遠の命を共にする伴侶として彼を選ぶ。
