A folk horror movie about a woman who follows her boyfriend into the woods for a romantic surprise only to find something far more sinister. Inspired by thousands of witness accounts documenting the ongoing phenomenon of a certain species of shape-shifting creature in the forests of North America.

In an isolated rural community of Quebec, Canada, some inhabitants attack other people, hungry for human flesh. A few survivors gather and go deep into the forest to escape them.

ノルウェーの田舎町で問題になっている熊の密猟事件を取材しにやってきた大学生3人組。彼らが怪しい男・ハンス（オットー・イェスパーセン）を尾行していたとき、何と伝説の生き物トロールが出現。ハンスは政府に雇われていたトロール・ハンターだったのだ。3人はハンスと一緒に行動し、トロールの衝撃的な生態をカメラに収める。

製作費6万ドルという低予算作品ながら、世界中で記録的な大ヒットとなったホラー映画「ブレア・ウィッチ・プロジェクト」の17年ぶりとなる続編。大学生のヘザー、ジョシュ、マイクが、森に生息するという伝説の魔女「ブレア・ウィッチ」をテーマにしたドキュメンタリー映画製作のため、ブラック・ヒルズの森に分け入った。しかし3人はそのまま消息を絶ち、森に消えた。あの事件から20年後、ヘザーの弟ジェームズが姉らしき人物の映った映像をYouTube見つける。そして、ジェームズは仲間とともに、森の中へ足を踏み入れる。監督は「サプライズ」「ザ・ゲスト」などのホラー作品を手がけ、ハリウッド版「デスノート」の監督も務めるアダム・ウィンガード。

1994年10月、モンゴメリー大学映画学科に所属する3人の大学生がドキュメンタリー映画製作のためにメリーランド州ブラック・ヒルズの森に分け入った。その土地に今なお残る伝説の魔女“ブレア・ウィッチ”をテーマにしていたのだ。だが3人はそのまま消息を絶つ。手掛かりが発見されないままやがて捜索は打ち切られた。しかし事件から1年後、彼らが撮影したものと思われるフィルムとビデオが森の中で発見される……。

クリスのアラスカでの生活と、アラスカに至るまでの道中、妹のナレーションが交互に挟まれる構成である。 裕福な家庭に生まれ、物質的に恵まれた環境で育ったクリス・マッキャンドレスは、エモリー大学を優秀な成績で卒業する。両親はハーバードのロースクールに進学することを望んでいたが、幼い頃から不和を見せつけられ、金で物ばかりを与えようとする両親に嫌気が差していたクリスは、学資預金を全額寄付し、世界の真理を求めアラスカへと旅に出る。

5日間のサバイバル・ゲームで勝ち抜くと賞金10万ドルというTV番組の撮影で、“アポカリプス(=黙示録)”と称する森の中に選ばれた若者たち6人が集合する。キンバリーもそれに参加するため森へ向けて車を走らせていたその時、突然何者かが飛び出してきたため、ブレーキをかける間もなく轢いてしまった。キンバリーは生存を確かめるため、倒れた男に恐る恐る顔を近づけると、その男に一瞬にして噛み付かれ、さらには森の中から出てきたもう一人に、斧でカラダを縦に真っ二つに切り裂かれた。そう、この森は人喰い一家の棲む森だった。ゲームの参加者達は、何も知らないままその森へと入っていく。
