2004年に発生したスマトラ沖大地震で被災した一家の実体験をもとに、ナオミ・ワッツ、ユアン・マクレガーら出演で映画化した感動のヒューマン・ストーリー。バカンス先のリゾート地で津波に巻き込まれ、はなればなれになった5人家族を描く。

その日、コルドとクララはバルセロナの結婚式場で永遠の愛を誓い合う。新郎の従弟はビデオカメラを回し、参列者たちの姿を撮っていた。やがてカメラは一族きっての明るい性格の叔父ペペが、病院で犬にかまれたという、彼の右手に巻かれた包帯を映し出す。
