公開当時、巨額の製作費を投じた事で有名な、その圧倒的な重厚感と豪華絢爛なセットに思わず驚嘆させられる歴史スペクタクル大作。エリザベス・テイラーが世界三大美女の一人クレオパトラを気高く演じる。紀元前48年、内乱の続くエジプトに侵略したローマ帝国の闘将シーザーは、そこでエジプトの女王クレオパトラの姿を見て一目で彼女の虜になってしまう……。

時は1872年、まだ飛行機も出現していない時代。イギリスはロンドンの社交クラブで、英国紳士フォッグ氏はひょんなことから“８０日間あれば世界一周できる”という賭けにのり、なんと２万ポンドという大金を賭け、自ら大冒険に出ることになる。さっそくフォッグ氏はパスパルトゥーを従者に従えロンドンを出発する。マルセイユへ向かう途中、汽車が止まってしまい気球を調達して先を急ぐ。ところが気球は風に流されてスペインへ。そして、パスパルトゥーはそこで、闘牛をするハメになってしまう。

ローマ行きの旅客機内に、爆弾が持ち込まれているという通報が入った。機長と主任スチュワーデスは、爆弾の入ったアタッシュ・ケースを確保しようとするが、犯人は爆弾もろとも自殺してしまう。そしてその衝撃で、旅客機の胴体に亀裂が入り、空中分解の危機が訪れる。急遽、旅客機はケネディ空港へ向けて転回するが、空港は猛吹雪のため一切の機能を停止していた……。
