金を払えば酒も麻薬も女も入手可能な凶悪犯だらけの刑務所を舞台に、名優メル・ギブソンが元軍人の犯罪者を演じるクライム・アクション。実在の刑務所をモデルとし、マフィアの大物から大金を盗み逃亡中の主人公が極悪人を相手にし烈な戦いを繰り広げる。『アポカリプト』などメルの作品で助監督を務めた経験のあるエイドリアン・グランバーグが本作で初メガホンを取り、テレビドラマ「プリズン・ブレイク」シリーズのピーター・ストーメアが共演。ダーク・ヒーロー役で本領を発揮する、タフでマッチョなメルから目が離せない。
