A tale of friendship between two unlikely pen pals: Mary, a lonely, eight-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max, a forty-four-year old, severely obese man living in New York.

ゲイブはロッキー山脈の仕事に就いていた。ある時、同僚のハルとハルの恋人・サラが山でデートをしている最中にハルが怪我をし、ゲイブが救助に向かう。ゲイブはハルの目の前のサラの救出に失敗しサラを死なせてしまう。以後ハルはゲイブを憎むようになり、同僚の恋人・ジェシーと別れ仕事もやめた。 その後、国際犯罪組織が財務省の紙幣輸送の飛行機を乗っ取り、使用済みの紙幣を強奪を図ったが、手違いから紙幣の入ったスーツケースを雪のロッキー山脈に落としてしまう。

After a tragic accident, six friends reunite for a caving expedition. Their adventure soon goes horribly wrong when a collapse traps them deep underground and they find themselves pursued by bloodthirsty creatures. As their friendships deteriorate, they find themselves in a desperate struggle to survive the creatures and each other.

1985年、英国の登山家2人、ジョーとサイモンは、標高が6600mもあり、前人未到の難所だったシウラ・グランデ峰の登頂に成功。だが下山途中にジョーが足を骨折してしまう。サイモンは、彼と自分の体をザイルでつないで下山を試みるが、再び予期せぬアクシデントが発生し、ジョーは氷の絶壁に宙吊りになってしまう。生と死の瀬戸際に立つサイモンは、覚悟を決め、2人をつなぐザイルをナイフで切断する決意をする。

2003年4月25日、金曜日。アーロン青年はロッククライミングを楽しむため、ブルー・ジョン・キャニオンに向けて車を走らせる。翌日、車から降ろしたマウンテンバイクにまたがった彼は、目的のポイントに出発。軽快にロッククライミングをしていた次の瞬間、アーロンは谷底に落ちてしまう。同時に落ちた岩のひとつは無残にも彼の右腕にのしかかり、一歩も動けなくなるアーロン。それから127時間、誰も救助に現われなかった。

3年前、ロッククライミング中に起きた事故で、ピーターは妹と自身を救うため父親の命綱を切ることを決断した。妹はそれを許すことができない。ピーターは苦悩から逃れるために山を拒否し、写真家となり、妹は父親の夢を追って登山家となる。そして世界第二位の高峰K2登頂に挑んでいたが事故に遭った妹は標高8,000mでクレバスに閉じ込められてしまう。妹を救うために世界で最も恐れられている山、K2へ向かうことを決意する。
