Quincy McCall and Monica Wright grew up in the same neighborhood and have known each other since childhood. うだつの上がらないスタンダップ・コメディアン、アルビーは、知り合った美女アニーと意気投合して同棲生活を始めるが、うまくいくのは最初だけ。次第に相手のイヤなところが気になり出した二人の間には見えない溝ができ上がっていた。そしてアニーの前に現れた人気歌手のカリフォルニアへの誘いが二人の仲にピリオドを打つ決定的なものとなった。
