中学生の日向翔陽は、ふとしたことからバレーボールに惹（ひ）かれるように。3年生になった彼は、学校にバレーボール部員が自分以外にいないという状態から何とかメンバーをそろえて公式戦に挑む。しかし、「コート上の王様」と称される影山飛雄が在籍する北川第一に敗北。中学最初で最後の公式戦がつらい結果に終わり悔しさを抱きながら、日向は烏野高校に入学。バレーボール部に入ろうとするが、中学の公式戦で自分を完膚なきまでにたたきのめした影山と再会する。

影山と切磋琢磨（せっさたくま）することでモチベーションもスキルもアップし、彼とのコンビネーションも良くなってきた日向。インターハイに出場した二人をはじめとする烏野高校バレー部は、常波高校を破って伊達工業高校と対戦することに。伊達工業が繰り出す鉄壁のブロックに苦戦を強いられながらも激闘の末に勝ち進んだ彼らは、県内で屈指の実力を誇る及川徹が所属する青葉城西高校と対峙（たいじ）するが……。
