シカゴ郊外の刑務所（ジョリエット刑務所）を出所したジョリエット・ジェイクと、彼を迎えに来た弟のエルウッドは、兄弟を育ててくれた孤児院に出所の挨拶に行くが、そこで、孤児院が5000ドルの税金を払えないため立ち退きの瀬戸際にあることを知る。孤児院の危機を救うため援助を申し出る二人だが、犯罪で得た汚れた金は要らないと逆に院長に追い払われてしまう。

とある夏、家族と共に避暑地にやってきた17才の少女ベイビーはそこで、ダンス・インストラクターのジョニーと出会い、愛し合うようになる。上流階級のお嬢様はやがて大人の女へと成長する。

Miklo is incarcerated and sent to San Quentin, where he makes a "home" for himself. Cruz becomes an exceptional artist, but a heroin addiction overcomes him with tragic results. Paco becomes a cop and an enemy to his "carnal", Miklo.
