ニューヨーク州北部。ある田舎のレストランで一人の女と一人の男が派手に乱闘を始める。当初は男が押していたが、次第に女が格闘能力を発揮し、乱闘を征した。その後、そこに居合わせた一人の青年・スコットを無理矢理連れて行き、スコットの車でその場を離れるように指示するのだった。そして女は自分が国際的なスパイであること、ある厄介なヤマに巻き込まれていることを語り始めた。 ワシントンD.C.。民間軍事企業の経営者ケネスは米国政府の実力者コブレンツとスペイン政府関係者のロドリーゴから人質救出作戦の依頼を受け、マロリーを指名される。 バルセロナ。アーロンを含む3人の工作員と合流。監禁されていたジャーナリストのジャンを救出し、ロドリーゴに引き渡す。 サンディエゴ。自宅で父親の新著『砂漠の強襲』という本を見ていると、ケネスが現れ、英国諜報機関MI-6絡みの新たな任務を指示。2人はかつて恋人で2日で仕事がすんだらマヨルカ島へ行こうといわれ、目印のブローチをもらう。 ダブリン。ポールと新婚になりすまし、スチューダーというフランス人に接触するが、手に自分のブローチを握ったジャンの死体を発見。ホテルでポールに襲われ、「このままじゃ危険だ、ケネスと話すんだ」といわれる。着信記録があった遺品の携帯でケネスに電話する。父親には実家に帰ると電話。翌日、警察に追われ、ロドリーゴに電話をすると、コブレンツから電話がかかり、ケネスが問題だと話す。 ニューヨーク。レストランで混乱の事情を聞くため会ったアーロンと格闘になり、居合わせたスコットの車で逃走【冒頭に戻る】。州警察に捕まり、襲撃した武装集団を振り切り、スコットに警察に伝言を依頼。 ニューメキシコ。父親の自宅にやって来たケネスとアーロンを迎え撃つ。コブレンツに会うと「ハロー効果」について語る。ケネスと闘い、計画の首謀者を知る。 マヨルカ島。新しい人生を始めたロドリーゴの前にマロリーが現れる。

「モルグ街の殺人」「黒猫」など数々の推理小説で著名な作家エドガー・アラン・ポーの最期の日々を大胆な発想で描いたサスペンス・スリラー。ポーの著作を模倣した連続殺人事件が起きたことで、事件解明のために彼自身が捜査に加わり殺人鬼を追い詰めていく。主人公ポーには『2012』のジョン・キューザック、共演には『三銃士/王妃の首飾りとダ・ヴィンチの飛行船』のルーク・エヴァンス、『ヒットマンズ・レクイエム』のブレンダン・グリーソンらが集結。『Vフォー・ヴェンデッタ』のジェームズ・マクティーグ監督による、作品の世界観を表現した映像にも注目。
