真珠湾攻撃直後のカリフォルニア沖に突如浮上する大日本帝国潜水艦。ただの田舎町をハリウッドと勘違いした潜水艦が攻撃を決定したことから、アメリカ陸軍と住民たちの大騒動が始まる。＜「JAWS／ジョーズ」「未知との遭遇」に続くスピルバーグ監督のコメディ作品。本作のモチーフとなったのは、イ17によるカリフォルニア州サンタバーバラのエルウッド石油製油所攻撃や、イ26によるカナダのバンクーバー島攻撃など、太平洋戦争中に遂行された日本海軍潜水艦による一連のアメリカ本土砲撃、そして日本軍の攻撃に対するアメリカ人の恐怖が引き起こしたロサンゼルスの戦いである。＞
1941年、ナチスに侵攻されたセルビア。パルチザンのマルコ（ミキ・マノイロヴィッチ）は地下室に弟のイヴァン（スラヴコ・スティマチ）や仲間のクロ（ラザル・リストフスキー）らをかくまい、武器を製造させることにする。英雄となったマルコは地下生活を続ける仲間たちには第2次世界大戦が続いていると思い込ませる一方、新政府の重要人物としてのし上がっていくが……。
1942年、日本統治下にあるジャワ島レバクセンバタの日本軍俘虜収容所で朝鮮人軍属カネモトがオランダの男性兵デ・ヨンを犯す。日本語を解する俘虜（捕虜）の英国陸軍中佐ジョン・ロレンスは、ともに事件処理にあたった粗暴な軍曹ハラと奇妙な友情で結ばれていく。 一方、ハラの上司で所長の陸軍大尉ヨノイは、日本軍の背後に空挺降下し輸送隊を襲撃した末に俘虜となった陸軍少佐ジャック・セリアズを預かることになり、その反抗的な態度に悩まされながらも彼に魅せられてゆく。 同時にカネモトとデ・ヨンの事件処理と俘虜たちの情報を巡り、プライドに拘る空軍大佐の俘虜長ヒックスリーと衝突する。東洋と西洋の宗教観、道徳観、組織論が違う中、各人に運命から届けられたクリスマスの贈りものが待っていた。

昭和20年6月9日、神戸は大空襲に見舞われ、清太は心臓の悪い母を先に防空壕へ避難させ、幼い妹節子を連れて後を追う。空襲の後、避難所である学校に着いた清太だったが、そこには、全身にやけどを負い瀕死の母の姿があった。母はそのまま息を引き取り、清太は節子と共に西宮にある叔母の家に間借りするが、次第に清太たちを厄介者扱いするようになる。嫌味を言われ、ご飯も満足に食べさせてもらえない生活に耐え切れなくなった清太は、家出を決意し、節子と２人で池のほとりの横穴での生活を始める。
第二次世界大戦最中の1940年、アメリカ軍潜水艦タイガー・シャークは大西洋海域を航海中、ドイツ軍潜水艦Uボートに撃沈されたイギリス病院船の生存者3名を救助する。そのうちの一人は看護婦のクレアという女性だった。この時代、“女性は潜水艦に不吉な災いをもたらす”と信じられていたことから、艦内に戦慄が走る。やがて、敵艦をやり過ごすため静まりかえっていた艦内で突如レコードが鳴り響いたり、不気味な囁き声が聞こえるなどの不可解な現象が起こり始めた。更にドイツ軍からの攻撃も激しさを増していき、乗組員は精神的にも追い詰められていく。
